Week 6: enCompass Culture

This site, I will go back to and navigate, to look for books, or read interviews or anything of interest. For me it has promise from a work perspective, in terms of recommending it to our customers as well as for myself. I wish the name weren't such a mouthful though!
Still it's on my "Favourites" list. Thanks!

Week 5: SlideShare

I am disappointed that I can see the list but can't actually download the the slide show that I've

chosen. i.e. "Beautiful libraries in the World". Maybe I'll try at home.

week 4: tastespotting

This is very unfair. Making us drool over gorgeous-looking delicacies at work! I chose the tomato and olive foccacia as something nibbly I might try out at home. A tasty Italian without complications!

Week 3 FeedMyInbox

Easy enough to use, apart from one more login and password to remember!!

I joined Tararua District libraries and have already received 3 feeds from them. I'm not so sure about this being so useful at work, however, customers may enjoy having the service made available.

VASANDAWALI, PAKISTAN - AUGUST 21: Families displaced from their homes by flooding travel through flood waters on August 21, 2010 in the village of Vasandawali south of Muzaffargarh in Punjab, Pakistan. The country's agricultural heartland has been devastated, with rice, corn and wheat crops destroyed by floods. Officials say as many as 20 million people have been affected during Pakistan's worst flooding in 80 years. The army and aid organizations are struggling to cope with the widespread scale of the disaster that has killed over 1,600 people and displaced millions. The UN has described the disaster as unprecedented, with over a third of the country under water. (Photo by Daniel Berehulak/Getty Images)

Some great pics in the collection. People said this exercise was easy-peasy and I agree except for the fact that you have to first publish publish your post and only then can you see the photo.
This could be most useful to big-time bloggers.

Box Files - Week 1

Aha! Once the settings issue was resolved, it was simple enough to upload and save a file.
Yes, I would recommend this to those customers who have nowhere to save their work to, as an online storage space.
Would I use it?
Sure, if I could remember it at such times as I might need it.

And last, but not least...

This was altogether a good learning experience, particularly Zamzar and GoodReads, which will be useful for work.

What I can't believe is that you've made me jump onto the face-book wagon, looking for old friends and new and generally wasting far too much time! Something I've tried to resist until now.....

Facebook

This was quite good in that I got quite hooked looking at pictures of old friends that kept popping up and either thinking OMG or Wow! However, I kept sneaking around without actually adding every name that I recognised as a "friend". However, I will revisit and contact people that I really want to when I have the t-i-m-e and can kick the kids off the computer at home!
As for our customers, I'd say like everything, some may go for it, while others, uh uh...
No, not hard to use, though I didn't get very much info off the Auckland Libraries Facebook page.

Hi and guess what?
A kind and sweet young colleague enlightened me today by informing me that MP3 doesn't necessarily mean a device that you plug into your ears to hear music, but that it is actually a file format!
Did a bit of exploring of the "free and legit" music down-loading sites. Interesting... could customers safely use it? I guess so.
When I tried to down-load, I was blocked by MCC gateway; however, I was able to start off on one site "free albums galore" (number 7 on the list), tried one track from the band ThisCo., but it all took too long to do at work.
Well at least I know it's there!
Thanks.
Bye for now.

GoodReads

Can this be called a "virtual" book club?

Great, for those who are looking for inspiration, want to follow recommendations and generally spend a lot of time on-line. I will keep this site in mind to introduce to customers that I think might be interested, especially younger ones.
tweet tweet...
a passable experience for me.
Sorry, but that means that I can pass it by and not die regretting it.

Anyway, looking forward to next week.

Week Two

Zamzar... having never heard of a site like this before, this was quite an eye-opener.
I've been in the situation before where I've needed to convert a file into a different format and was pleased to see that it worked for me, straightaway.
Yes, I would recommend it to customers, when the need arises and might even surprise the kids at home who think of me (and rightly so) as a dinosaur on the computer!

Can't seem to be able to register my block. Will have to leave it for next week.

Roll on Web 2

Ha! Started a 6 week journey. Hope it's not going to be a bumpy ride!
